Questions, answered
Ten things people ask before they book.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel a brief pinch or nothing, then a dull, heavy or warm sensation at some points. The needles are fine, much thinner than those used for injections. Tell your acupuncturist at once if anything is uncomfortable, and they adjust or remove it.
Are the needles clean?
Yes. Needles are sterile and single-use, opened in front of you and put in a sharps container afterward.
How many visits will I need?
Your acupuncturist suggests a plan after the first visit and ties it to your clinic's dates. It is a plan, not a promise, and you can change it or stop.
Does insurance cover it?
We are out of network. Some plans reimburse part of a visit, and we give you an itemized receipt after each one. See how fees work for the four questions to ask your plan.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Many people do. Ask your plan administrator before you book.
What should I wear and eat?
Loose clothing with sleeves and pant legs that roll up. Eat something light first, and don't come on an empty stomach.
What happens at a first visit?
About 75 minutes: a talk, a treatment and a plan. See the first visit page for the steps in order.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Tell us the same day if you are or might be pregnant. Your acupuncturist changes what they do and explains the risks, and we send you to your clinic with any question about your pregnancy.
Will I have to stop my medicine?
No. Tell your prescriber and your acupuncturist about everything you take. Keep taking your medicines as your clinic has told you.
What does acupuncture not do, and when should I see a doctor instead?
It does not replace your clinic's care or your doctor's, and we make no promise about a result. Call your clinic or your doctor first for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, a fever or any symptom your clinic told you to report. For an emergency, call 911.
